Lecsó, the Hungarian ratatouille

Experience the rustic charm of Hungarian Lecsó, a hearty medley of peppers, tomatoes, and onions simmered to perfection. This classic comfort dish celebrates the fresh, bold flavours that have made it a favourite in Hungarian kitchens for generations.

Ingredients:
  • 3 tbsp lard or oil

  • 2 onions

  • 6 sweet yellow peppers

  • 4 tomatoes

  • 2 tsp paprika powder

  • salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 250ml water

  • 4 slices of bread for serving

Steps:
  1. Heat up your choice of fat.

  2. Slice the onions into strings, the yellow peppers into 2-3 cm pieces and get rid of the seeds, then dice up the tomatoes.

  3. Once your oil or lard is hot enough add the onions and sauté them, then stir in the peppers.

  4. Fold in the paprika, salt, pepper and water, then let it cook for 10 minutes. 

  5. Add the tomatoes and cook for an additional 5 minutes, then serve it with bread.


Extra tip: You can also add sausages, ham or eggs for a twist!
